GTA 6 Graphics Deep Dive — RAGE, Lighting, and What's Actually New

Rockstar's latest RAGE build is doing a lot of quiet work in the GTA 6 trailers. Below is a grounded look at what appears genuinely new versus what is polished-but-familiar.

Lighting: the biggest single leap

The most visible change is how Vice City handles time of day. Golden-hour scenes show much richer indirect bounce lighting than GTA V's engine could manage, and night scenes lean heavily on emissive materials — neon, headlights, signage — casting believable local light.

Materials and water

• Water simulation appears meaningfully denser, with visibly better interactions between waves, boats, and shorelines.
• Skin and hair get a shader upgrade that matters most in cutscenes and during long dialogue sequences.
• Wet surfaces — Rockstar is clearly showing off dynamic wetness effects from rain and coastal spray.

Crowd and traffic density

Trailer footage shows notably more concurrent AI actors than any previous Rockstar title. That's a game-engine investment as much as an art one — animation LODs and behavior systems both have to keep up.

• The gap (or lack of one) between console and PC lighting quality.
• How Photo Mode is treated at launch given community expectations.
